Western Coastal & Marine Geology
This aerial image shows the portion of south Moloka‘i coast from Pālā‘au (left) to Kamiloloa (right), including the major population center of the the island, the town of Kaunakakai. The shallow inner reef flat is almost 1 mile (1.5 km) at this point and consists mainly of sediment and algae covering an ancient reef platform. West of the Kaunakakai Wharf, the forereef has lush coral growing in spur-and-groove formations. The semi-rectangular shaped underwater "pit" in the left portion of the image appears to be natural. The side walls of the pit are covered with healthy corals, while the bottom of the pit is a flat sand plain.
